My Big Fat Rejected Pitch
Below is a pitch that was rejected from, well, Everywhere! Or almost everywhere. It may prove instructional to other pitchers out there. Enjoy!
My Big Fat Queer Prom
It's prom season, and Zoe Erwin has hers all planned out. She's going
to wear a white, ruffly pin-up girl dress with Fluevog heels. She is
going to skip a limo and date and go with friends instead.
While many of the details about her big night sound
like a typical prom goer's, Ms. Erwin herself is far from typical.
Zoe Erwin is 36 years old. She wears a plus-size 3X dress, which is
about a size 24 at Dress Barn. And she's a lesbian. On April 28, Ms.
Erwin will be heading to "My Big Fat Queer Prom," held at the Seacoast
Grille in Asbury Park. Along with 25 other lesbians and gays expected to
attend, she will pass through the rainbow balloon arch on her way to the
dance floor.
This will be the first time the prom is held. Theresa Meire, planner of
the big night, says that while gay proms like Morp (read it backwards)
have been around since the eighties, proms for ample gays and lesbians are
a new trend. Cupcakes, a group for plus-sized lesbians in Oregon has held
two such dances, but Ms. Meire says this will be the first event of its
kind on the East coast.
For Ms. Erwin, Ms. Meire and many others there that night, this will in
fact be their first prom. After all, they faced being doubly ostracized -
both for their weight and sexual orientation -- in their youth.
For an article, I propose following Ms. Erwin and her friends as they
prepare for prom so long after their yearbook has come out.
What did they do that night when their classmates were at the high
school prom so long ago? Are they serious about this or do they
themselves think it is kind of corny? Where do you find a plus-size
semi-formal dress in sea-foam?
This would, naturally, also be a good context to examine whether gay
kids today are finding proms any more welcoming, and whether gay youth
groups are making strides to make proms more accommodating to same-sex
couples. Are gay high school seniors - fat and thin - ordering
corsages, or will the class of 2007 also be throwing an alternate prom
in ten years? There is also a growing body, so to speak, of
"fat-positive" scholarship, and some of those scholars, gay and
straight, would be interesting to interview about this.
My Big Fat Queer Prom will be held Friday, April 28th
